Ever since my first
motorcycle ride, I always dreamed about taking a cross-country
trip "some day", while never expecting that dream
could become a reality in the forseeable future. As the years
went by, abstract dreaming about the trip progressed into
talking about the trip. Then a close friend and I both were
laid off from our jobs during the winter of 2004/2005, and
talking about the trip became basic planning (all the while
never expecting the trip to become a reality). He had a 1980
Honda CB750 that could barely complete an hour ride around
the backroads of Maryland (the battery wouldn't charge), let
alone a 3,000 mile journey to the West Coast. "No
problem" he said. "Once we fix the alternator
problem, I'll be good to go - and worst case, if the bike
dies somewhere on the trip, I'll just leave it there and fly
home!" I was skeptical, but began to believe.
To be continued...
