| I
have ape hangers installed on both my 1993
FXSTS and my Rigid
Buell Chopper, and have had problems with the bars rotating
either forward or backward in the risers when I hit a large
bump or have to push one of the motorcycles into the garage,
etc. This happens because ape hangers exert significantly more
leverage than much shorter handlbars.
An easy solution
is installing a small tension pin in the handlbars and risers
to prevent rotation. Mount the ape hangers in the position you
want them installed, and remove both pinch bolts on one of the
riser caps (The other riser cap should remain tight to keep
the handlbars in position).
Carefully drill a
hole the same diameter as your tension pin (I used 1/8"
pins) in the center of the riser cap. Only drill the hole about
as deep as 1/2 the length of the tension pin, being careful
not to drill all the way through the top of the riser.
Tap the tension pin
into the hole you drilled until it is fully seated. Then place
the riser cap back in position, using the tension pin to mark
the spot on the handlebars to drill the hole. Carefully drill
a hole in the handlebars so that it aligns with the tension
pin you already inserted in the riser cap.
Once the hole is
drilled in the handlebars, you should be able to tap the riser
cap back into place, which will force the riser pin into the
hole in the handlebars. Tighten the riser pinch bolts, and then
repeat the same process for the other riser.
That's it! The tension
pins are completely hidden from view, but will keep the ape
hangers from rotating, no matter how hard you push or pull on
them.
