How to Change Carburetor Jets

This how-to is applicable to any Keihin 40mm CV carburetor, typically found on 1984 to 1999 Harley Davidson Evolution motors (Softails, Dynas, Sportsters, etc.). This schematic diagram may also be helpful when working on your carburetor.

Carburetor Jet Change - Step 1
Step 1:
Make sure the fuel petcock is in the "off" position. Locate the float drain screw and turn it counterclockwise. You may need to use a small stubby screwdriver as pictured. Open the float drain screw to drain all gas from the float bowl.

Carburetor Jet Change - Step 2
Step 2:
Open the float drain screw to drain all gas from the float bowl.

Carburetor Jet Change - Step 3
Step 3:
Remove 2 float bowl screws on the left side of the carburetor. On a stock carburetor, these are brass phillips head screws, which are very easy to strip. If you replace them with my carburetor stainless allen screw kit, they look a lot nicer, and they're a lot easier to remove and re-install with a 3mm hex key.

Carburetor Jet Change - Step 4
Step 4:
Remove 2 float bowl screws on the right side of the carburetor.

Carburetor Jet Change - Step 5
Step 5:
Remove the float bowl (be carefuly not to bump or damage the float), and remember to close the float bowl drain screw.

Carburetor Jet Change - Step 6
Step 6:
Remove the current main jet from the main jet holder and reinstall the new main jet. Be careful not to overtighten.

Step 7:
Reinstall the float bowl.

Step 8:
Reinstall the float bowl, taking care not to bump or damage the rubber float. Install the 4 float bowls screws by snugging them evenly and then tightening in a criss-cross pattern. Do not overtighten.

Step 9:
Re-open the fuel petcock and check the float bowl gasket and float drain hose to make sure fuel is not leaking. That's it!
